The sign for Springhill Farm

I founded my first shop in West Linn, Oregon, USA, in 1992 and named it Molehill Farm for the tiny acre of land attached to it. Then I began began teaching spinning with the wool from my newly acquired sheep.

My shop eventually expanded to include weaving and knitting classes and all the fun supplies and accessories associated with these crafts.

That shop belongs to good friends in Oregon; as following my re-marriage to Johnny Robinson, a dedicated shepherd and sheepdog handler, my two sons and I relocated to Springhill Farm on the south east coast of Scotland in 1996.

In December 2000 I opened the Moondance Wools Studio and Shop at Springhill Farm but only two months later the warnings were out for Foot & Mouth Disease.  Not wishing to risk the spread of the disease to our flock, Johnny and I decided to close the farm  as did all our farming neighbours.

       Margie's Studio at Springhill Farm

It was not until December 2001 that we were able to re-open the farm and studio to visitors again. Happily things have been growing ever since.

Just like my former business in Oregon, Moondance Wools became a full-service teaching centre.

It has been built around the sense of community with other artists and crafters who wanted to meet each other and share their ideas and skills in a friendly and soothing environment.

A large part of my philosophy is that the inner creative process involved in these ancient and historic crafts is very therapeutic in today's modern world. The modern pace of life can push us all into the frantic zone and we can all benefit from sitting still and slowing down to explore our creative side, including me!

So I now concentrate on my own designs, patterns, and creative work: producing my own Shetland yarn from my unique little flock. I no longer breed my own sheep as my unusual flock is now primarily made up of wethers (neutered males) and/or a few ewes which may have proved barren or are growing older but nonetheless still produce wonderful fleeces.

Margie's Norfolk Terriers, Meggie and Flo

'Flo' and 'Meggie' seek your attention!

Many of my sheep have been rescued and retired to Springhill Farm where they're kept solely for their wool instead of what would have been their more usual destiny in the livestock trade, the meat market!

Although I no longer run a retail outlet for spinning, weaving, and knitting equipment, please take a few minutes to browse these pages and be tempted by my designs and patterns, fleeces and fibres, varied yarns and handwoven and knitted items you will still find available from Moondance Wools.

I'm always very pleased to welcome and open my studio-shop to visitors when I know they are coming, so please contact me to arrange a mutually convenient time for your visit; or call or e-Mail me to have me answer any questions or queries you may have.
