Kits and Patterns from Margie and friends in France and Scotland
The designs and patterns on this page were specially created for my own custom spun Moondance Wools Shetland Yarns by my friend from France -

Jennie Howes

We met by chance one day when she spotted the sign for Moondance Wools as she drove past our entrance.

As I showed her round my studio, I asked her if she would like to try some of my own Shetland yarn made from the fleeces produced by my small flock of British breed sheep and fortunately for me, she said, yes!

The kits are always individually and carefully packed to order and include the pattern and all yarn needed to complete the project. Alternatively, you may purchase just the patterns for £2.50 each.
The lovely wooden needles from Brittany and Symfonie can be purchased separately,  so please see the needles pages
.

Jennie has also written 'Felting Notes'.  Highly recommended for everyone who wants to fully understand the felting process in knitted garments. In two pages she gives an extensive technical explanation (complete with calculations) and excellent suggestions to help achieve the best results with both machine and hand felting.
Sold separately - Price: £2.00

These mitts are beautifully sturdy and fit for work, as well as windproof. They measure approximately 22cm/8.5 in around the palm and 17-18cm/7 in from wrist to knuckle.

Needles required (sold separately):  4.5mm/ U.S. 7 (40cm/16in) circular or double pointed.

Yarn (100g mixed colours) and Pattern - Price:  £11.00
Pattern only - Price: £2.50

For keeping shepherds warm on the hills and fells, or just looking the part in town!  Here we used roughly equal amounts of each of six colours.

Hat circumference is approximately 60cm/23.5 in with a depth of around 10cm/ 4 in measured from crown to nape of neck.

Needles required (sold separately): Two separate 4.5mm/U.S. 7  (40cm/16in) circular needles, to make peak double-sided.

Yarn & pattern only - Price: £14.50
The Pattern only - Price: £ 2.50

NB: There is no need for a stiffener in the peak as the construction technique makes it  unnecessary, so you can just fold it and put it away in your pocket!

This remarkable hat can be worn as either a snug beanie hat or a cosy neck warmer, as is shown off so well by my grand-daughter Hayley, at the top of this page!

It is finished with a cord and a lovely horn button so its easily folded to keep in your pocket and convert to either when the weather turns chilly.

The circumference is approximately 60cm/23.5in and length is 21cm/8in.
Needles required (sold separately):  4.5mm/U.S. 7 (40cm/16in) circular needle.

Yarn (150g mixed colours), natural horn button, and Pattern - Price: £15.50
Pattern only - Price: £2.50

This decorative, comfy cushion will offer fine neck or back support - or even a place to hide your wool stash!

We stuffed this cushion with washed and carded wool fibre in lieu of a pillow insert, so why not hide your extra wool inside and make it a storage solution as well?

Trimmed out with authentic horn buttons to close, it is a lovely natural item for your home!

Measures approximately 30cm/12in diameter. Needles required (sold separately):
Two 4.5mm/U.S. 7 (60 or 80cm/24 or 30in) on circular needles.

Yarn (200g mixed colours), two natural horn buttons and the pattern - Price: £20.00
Pattern only - Price:  £2.50

How to define this remarkable project is more or less up to you - it is equally at home displayed on a table or in a window as an objet d'art; or put it to use and bring it along with you on a picnic, or to the farmers' market, or off to town.

Because it is felted, it will hold up to use and still look wonderful!

Yarn(200g mixed colours) and pattern - Price: £18.50
Horn buttons (optional)
Pattern only Price: £2.50

How appropriate for Moondance Wools to have a pattern in essence created by an astronomical figure!

The Moebius is a mathematical figure discovered by Professor August Moebius, a German mathematician and astronomer in the early 19th century.  This figure has only one side and one edge - somewhat magical - and in knitted form creates an unending circle.

Needles required (sold separately):4mm/U.S. 6 circular needle (100cm or 120cm best/40 or 48in)

Yarn (200g mixed colours) and Pattern - Price: £18.00
or Yarn (200g solid colour) and Pattern - Price: £16.50
Pattern Only - Price: £ 2.50

These mittens take about 30 - 35 grams of yarn and measure approximately 18cm (7in) long X 18cm (7 in) around the palm of the hand.  You will have enough yarn for two large or three small or medium pairs.

If you need to make them bigger, just add in an even number of stitches on both the front and back of mitten, based on the tension/gauge and your individual hand measurement (explanation in pattern).

Needles required (sold separately): 4mm/U.S. 6 (40cm/16in) circular, or the same size in double-point needles.
Also, a cable needle.

Yarn (100g) and Pattern - Price: £9.50
Pattern only - Price: £2.50

Shetland Hug Jumper and Zip Cardigan
The Hug Ribbed Jumper showing rear neck detail Here we have two patterns in one!

A warm and very stylish hug jumper and an equally fabulous zipped cardigan.

As the name implies, this beautifully fitting jumper hugs the body in a most comforting way and Jennie has sculpted her design out of stretchy K2P2 ribs which ensures the jumper is a very cosy and comfortable fit.

The body and sleeves are worked separately in the round, and then neatly joined together by knitting onto one larger circular needle to produce a beautifully smooth finish and fitted shape throughout.

It was originally designed in one solid colour, but may be knit in multi-coloured stripes if you prefer, for the slight extra cost of £2.50.

Needles required (sold separately): 4mm circulars: 40cm for sleeves (or double points), 80cm or 100cm for body, 120cm for joining and knitting arms into main body.

Yarn (350g, Small 36-38) and Pattern - Price: £28.50
Yarn (450g, Medium 38 - 40) and Pattern - Price: £34.50
Yarn (550g Larger 42 - 44) and Pattern - Price: £43.50

Pattern only - Price: £3.50

The Hug Ribbed Cardigan - zipped! Jennie has cleverly adapted the same pattern and style to produce this lovely zipped cardigan.

Fitted with a 30cm zip it becomes another very useful and attractive addition to anyone's wardrobe.

Shown here knitted in the striped rib it can of course also be knitted in a solid colour as is the jumper shown above.

The Hug Ribbed Cardigan - un-zipped!
